Starting Lineup

VAN DER MEEI · METGOD · SPELBOS · HOVENKAMP · PETERS · JONKER · ARNTZ · NYGAARD · KIST · TOL · TREIJTEL

AZ focuses on defensive solidity and rapid transitions. They employ a 5-3-2 formation to maintain a compact unit across the pitch. This lineup is designed to absorb pressure and strike quickly when the opposition leaves space behind. The intent is to sit deep and wait for the right moment to break quickly.

TREIJTEL sits in goal to oversee the defensive unit and organize the line. The back line functions as a three man block with PETERS acting as the central defender to clear the lines and win headers. METGOD and SPELBOS operate as the wide centre backs, providing cover and stepping up to intercept passes. On the flanks, VAN DER MEEI and HOVENKAMP act as attacking wing backs. They can push high to support the attack or drop back to create a narrow defensive block when the team defends zonally to deny the turn.

The midfield consists of a three man line that sits in front of the defense. ARNTZ and JONKER occupy the central roles to win the second ball and shield the back three. They work to compress the midfield, track runners, and pick up runners in the central areas. NYGAARD plays as an attacking ten in the hole to connect the defense to the attack. NYGAARD aims to receive on the half turn and play through the lines to find the forwards.

AZ utilizes a two forward partnership with TOL and KIST leading the press from the front. They work together to press the opposition back line and fight for long balls. TOL often works to hold up the ball and lay it off, allowing KIST to make runs in behind. The wing backs, HOVENKAMP and VAN DER MEEI, provide the width by looking to overlap the midfielders and whip it in toward the danger zone. This creates combinations that allow the strikers to break the line or play a one two to bypass the defense.

One major advantage is the extreme compactness when defending in a mid block. This makes it hard for the opponent to play through the lines or find space between the units. The team also gains a significant advantage through speed of transition. Once the ball is won, the movement of the wing backs and the directness of the front two allows the team to hit in behind on the transition and find the feet of the striker.

The 5-3-2 formation allows AZ to remain difficult to break down in tight games. It is best used when facing teams that play with high possession and heavy width to exploit space.
