Inter aims to control the tempo through high pressing and direct verticality in a 3-5-2. This formation is built to dominate the central areas while using wing backs to stretch the opposition. By utilizing a compact mid-block and quick transitions, Inter can suffocate opponents in their own half.

Yann Sommer operates between the posts to anchor the defense. The back line consists of a central trio featuring Acerbi, Bastoni, and Pavard. Acerbi acts as the central defender to win headers and clear the lines, while Bastoni functions as a ball playing defender who can step up into midfield. Pavard provides cover on the right side to ensure the defensive unit remains compact. The defenders work as a cohesive unit to defend zonally and catch opponents with an offside trap.

A three man midfield serves as the engine room for Inter. Asllani sits in a single pivot role to shield the defense and recycle possession. Barella drives forward with the ball to connect the lines and makes late runs into the box. Mkhitaryan operates alongside him to provide creative passing and link up play between the defensive and attacking layers. This group works to win the second ball and press aggressively to win it back high up the pitch.

The attacking unit relies on a partnership of two forwards. Lautaro Martínez acts as a pressing centre forward to force long balls from the opposition, while S. Esposito works to find the feet of the striker and play in tight spaces. Darmian and C. Augusto provide the necessary width as wing backs, pushing high to overlap the midfielders. They aim to get to the byline to deliver early crosses for the two strikers. The front line uses combinations to pull defenders out of position.

One major advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield when the wing backs push high. This allows the team to squeeze the space and control the central corridor. Another strength is the ability to switch play quickly using the wide players to isolate one on one situations. The coordination of the back three and the midfield pivot makes Inter very hard to break down in a compact shape.

This 3-5-2 formation is built for teams that want to dominate through central control and aggressive pressing. It is best suited for games against opponents who play with a back four and can be overwhelmed by wide overloads.
