Estudiantes (LP) focuses on a compact defensive block and quick transitions, utilizing a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and deny space between the lines, waiting to strike as the opposition pushes forward. The goal for Estudiantes (LP) is to maintain a rigid shape and use the central density to frustrate opponents before launching direct attacks.
F. Muslera acts as the last line of defense, organizing the back four from his position in goal. A flat back four consists of E. Meza at right back and D. Machado at left back, while A. Rogel and S. Boselli occupy the central roles. Rogel and Boselli look to win the header and clear the lines when long balls are played. Meza and Machado work to keep the defensive line narrow, often dropping deep to form a compact block when the team sits deep.
The midfield operates as a five man unit that congests the center of the pitch. S. Ascacíbar and Y. Herrera act as a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Herrera, the captain, uses his positioning to intercept passes and protect the central defenders. T. Palacios, R. Sosa, and C. Medina operate ahead of the pivot to link the defensive and attacking lines. Sosa and Palacios look to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces, while Medina helps to recycle possession and support the transition from defense to attack.
G. Carrillo operates as a lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and making runs in behind. He must work to pin the last defender and create space for the midfielders arriving late into the box. The wide midfielders must tuck in to support the central block, leaving the flanks for the full backs to occupy in transition. The team builds attacks through quick passes to Carrillo, who attempts to lay it off to the oncoming midfield runners.
This formation provides significant strength through numerical superiority in the central midfield area. By packing the middle with Ascacíbar, Herrera, Palacios, Sosa, and Medina, the team can easily congest the passing lanes. The compactness when defending makes it difficult for opponents to play through the lines, forcing them to play wide where they can be closed down.
This 4-5-1 formation is designed for teams that want to control the game through defensive solidity and central density. It is best suited for matches against possession based opponents where Estudiantes (LP) can absorb pressure and hit on the break.
