Avranches operates with a high intensity and a heavy emphasis on attacking numbers through a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition by crowding the final third and forcing mistakes through constant pressure. It is a formation built to play with high risk, prioritizing directness and speed to catch the opponent out of position.

The goalkeeper sits behind a very narrow defensive line consisting of two central defenders. These two players must be ready to cover vast amounts of space because the formation lacks full backs to provide width in the defensive phase. They often have to step up to intercept long balls or act as sweeping defenders to protect the space behind them. The entire defensive unit must remain extremely compact to prevent the opposition from finding gaps between the lines.

In the middle of the pitch, the team utilizes a four man midfield that acts as the engine for the Avranches transition. The CM and LCM players work to win the second ball and shield the two central defenders, while the RB and CM in the central roles help to carry the ball forward. This midfield group works to connect the defense to the front four by recycling possession and finding the players on the flanks. They must be prepared to shift quickly across the pitch to block passing lanes and support the press.

The attacking unit is incredibly heavy, featuring two strikers and two wide players who look to exploit every inch of the opposition half. The RM and LM play as wide wingers who stretch the defense, creating space in the middle for the two CF players. These two strikers work in tandem to pin the last defender and create chaos in the box. The team builds attacks by moving the ball quickly to the wings to cross or by playing through the lines to find the strikers in central positions.

One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back up the pitch. By having six players concentrated in the middle and attacking zones, the team creates immense pressure on the opponent's build up play. This also allows for quick transitions where the ball can be moved from a central recovery directly to the wide players or strikers.

This 2-4-4 formation is designed for a high risk, high reward style of football that seeks to dominate through numbers. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to chase a result or face an opponent that struggles to play out from the back under pressure.
