Avranches Football Formation
Starting Lineup
GK · CB · CB · ST · ST · RM · LM · CM · CM · RB · LBAvranches relies on a high press and aggressive verticality with a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to hunt for the ball high up the pitch and quickly hit the opposition in transition. The goal is to use massive numbers in the final third to pin the opposition back and create chaos.
The goalkeeper starts the build up from the back. In front, a flat back four maintains a high line to keep the team compact. The RCB and LCB must act as ball playing defenders to move the ball into the midfield. RB and LB act as wide defenders who must track back quickly when possession is lost to prevent being caught out by long balls. The whole defensive unit works to squeeze the space and keep the play in the opponent half.
A double pivot forms the engine room of the Avranches midfield. The DM shields the defence by sitting in front of the back four to pick up runners and intercept passes. The AM acts as a carrier to drive the ball forward and connects the defensive and attacking lines. This two man midfield must work tirelessly to cover the large gaps between the lines when the team loses the ball. They are responsible for recycling possession and ensuring the team does not get bypassed easily.
The attack uses four players to stretch the defence and overwhelm the backline. Two forwards work as a partnership in the center, with one often acting as a target man to hold up the ball. RW and LW operate as wide wingers who hug the touchline to spread the width of the pitch. These attackers press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. They look to make runs in behind or receive the ball in tight spaces to create quick combinations.
This formation offers the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The numerical superiority in the attacking line can also isolate wide players in one on one situations. By pinning the last defender with two central strikers, the team creates more room for the wide players to work.
This 4-2-4 lineup is a high risk, high reward system focused on overwhelming the opposition. It is best suited for games where Avranches needs to chase a result against a team that sits deep.
