Netherlands National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
GRAVENBERCH · XAVI SIMONS · GAKPO · REIJNDERS · VAN DE VEN · TIMBER · BOTMAN · DE JONG · HATO · KOOPMEINERS · VERBRUGGENThe Netherlands play with a heavy attacking intent using a 4-2-4. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition through high pressure and quick forward movements. By pushing many players into the final third, the team looks to pin the opposition back and create constant threats in the box.
VERBRUGGEN stays between the posts to anchor the back line. A flat back four provides the base, with HATO and TIMBER acting as the full backs. HATO can push forward to offer width, while TIMBER provides support on the opposite flank. Positioned centrally, BOTMAN and VAN DE VEN act as the two central defenders. BOTMAN uses his aerial strength to win the header during defensive phases, while VAN DE VEN uses his recovery speed to cover space when the line steps up. They must defend zonally and work together to clear the lines.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. DE JONG and GRAVENBERCH occupy the two central spots to link the defense and attack. While DE JONG is tasked to drop between the centre backs to receive and recycle possession, GRAVENBERCH drives forward with the ball to break the line. Together, they must stay compact to prevent being bypassed in the middle. They are responsible to pick up runners and shield the defenders when the team loses the ball.
The front line for the Netherlands consists of four attackers to stretch the defence. XAVI SIMONS and KOOPMEINERS operate as wide players, with XAVI SIMONS often cutting inside to find space. KOOPMEINERS provides width and can deliver early crosses into the box. In the center, GAKPO and REIJNDERS work as a partnership. GAKPO can drop into the hole to link up play, while REIJNDERS acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line. This attacking unit is designed to create runs in behind and use combinations to split the defence with a through ball.
This formation offers massive advantages in transition and attacking phases. The team creates wide overloads by using the full backs to overlap the winger. Having four players close to the opposition goal allows for an ability to press high in coordinated waves. Such pressure helps the team win the ball back high up the pitch and force mistakes.
This formation is a high risk, high reward system aimed at dominating matches through offensive power. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block or chase a result.
