Controlling the ball and dominating territory through high pressing is the main identity for Spain in this 5-2-3 formation. The team plays to keep the ball in the opponent half and win it back quickly. This lineup is built to squeeze the space and use possession to tire the opposition.

U. Simón stays in goal to command the defensive unit. The back five operates with Rodri in the center to play out from the back and act as a ball playing defender. They push high up the pitch to overlap the winger and stretch the defence to create openings.

The midfield works as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch and link the play. Gavi brings high pressing intensity to trigger a press and win the ball back high up the pitch. Pedri uses his passing range to recycle possession and find teammates in tight spaces. These two players connect the back line to the forwards by playing through the lines and receiving on the half turn. They work to control the tempo and prevent the opponent from breaking quickly on the transition.

The front three consist of wide players and a central striker to attack the opposition. Yamal stays wide on the right to isolate a one on one situation using his dribbling style. Olmo operates from the left to cut inside and create room for Cucurella to overlap. Oyarzabal acts as the striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of the midfielders. This front line works to press the opposition back line and create runs in behind to score.

A major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads. By having M. Llorente and Cucurella push forward, the team can overwhelm the flanks. The team also gains numerical superiority in the midfield when the wing backs move into advanced positions. This allows the players to combine in tight spaces and move the ball with speed to break the lines.
