Starting Lineup

This lineup is built to suffocate the opponent in their own half and transition into attack with extreme speed. By using a narrow central core and a wide attacking line, the team seeks to overwhelm the opposition through sheer numbers in the middle and directness in the final third.

Hedl stands between the posts to oversee the defensive unit. The formation utilizes a two man back line consisting of Horn and Raux Yao. These central defenders must play a high line to keep the team compact and squeeze the space. Horn and Raux Yao act as the primary shield, needing to be ready to step up to catch attackers offside or cover the space left behind when the midfield pushes forward.

The midfield unit is the engine of SK Rapid and provides immense coverage across the pitch. Bolla and J. Auer function as a double pivot to shield the two central defenders and win the second ball. Oswald and Grgic operate as inverted eights, moving into the half spaces to connect the build up to the final third. Seidl plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, acting as the main creative hub to play through the lines and find the forwards.

In the attacking phase, the team employs three forwards to stretch the defence. Arnautovic leads the line as a target man, looking to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Jansson stays wide on the left while Radulovic occupies the right flank to provide width. These wide attackers often cut inside to create central overloads, allowing Seidl to find pockets of space. The goal is to create runs in behind or deliver crosses to Arnautovic to attack the far post.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly through numerical superiority in the central midfield areas. The presence of five midfielders allows the team to control the tempo and win possession high up the pitch. Another strength is the ability to launch quick attacks, as the distance between Seidl and the front three is minimal, making it easy to play one-two combinations and hit the opposition on the transition.
