Starting Lineup

Weverton · Giay · Bruno Fuchs · Micael · Vanderlan (Mayke) · Aníbal Moreno · Richard Ríos · Maurício · Estêvão · Allan · Vitor Roque

To deny space and strike on the break, Palmeiras utilizes a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a defensively solid and counter attacking style of football. The team focuses on sitting deep to frustrate the opponent and waits for the chance to break quickly.

Weverton stays on his line to protect the goal. The defensive unit uses a back five with Bruno Fuchs as the right centre-back, Aníbal Moreno in the middle, and Micael as the left centre-back. Aníbal Moreno is tasked to win the header and clear the lines under pressure. Giay plays as the right wing back to provide width, while Vanderlan (Mayke) works as the left wing back to maintain the defensive block. The central defenders must stay narrow to protect the middle and show the striker outside.

The midfield operates in a flat line of four to provide cover. Richard Ríos acts as the pivot to shield the defence and intercept play. Maurício and Allan work to connect the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession. Estêvão plays in the midfield quartet to carry the ball forward and find the feet of the striker. This group works together to compress the midfield and win it back high up the pitch.

Vitor Roque operates as a lone striker to lead the press from the front. He uses his movement to find space and can run in behind the opposition back line. When the team wins the ball, Giay and Vanderlan (Mayke) push high to provide width. This allows for quick combinations where the forwards can hit in behind on the transition. The movement is designed to create overlaps from wide and allow the team to attack the far post.

This formation offers immense compactness when defending in a mid-block. The presence of five defenders and four midfielders makes it very hard to play through the lines. The Verdão also benefits from the speed of transition when recovering the ball. This allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations and exploit the space behind the opponent.

The 5-4-1 formation provides a resilient identity for Palmeiras to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and play with a high line.
