In the middle, a three-man midfield works to control the center of the pitch. Palmer sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. João Pedro and Estêvão play as the two central midfielders to connect the defensive line to the attack. João Pedro works to drive forward with the ball, while Estêvão looks to play through the lines. This trio helps the Blues win the second ball and progress the ball into the final third.

The attack relies on a partnership of two forwards with Rodrygo and Neto leading the line. Rodrygo plays as a mobile striker who can drop into pockets of space, while Neto works as a pressing centre-forward to hunt the ball. The team uses the width of the wing backs to create chances. When the ball is won, James and Cucurella push up to overlap the midfield and deliver crosses. Rodrygo and Neto focus on making runs in behind to exploit the space.

This formation provides great compactness when defending in a low block. Having three central defenders and a single pivot makes it difficult for teams to play through the middle or find gaps. Another advantage is the speed of transition when the ball is intercepted in the middle third. Chelsea can quickly spread wide to use the overlapping runs to stretch the defense and create one on one situations.
