Starting Lineup

LAINE · ROCHET · TRAN · DURAND · COUTURIER · BERTRAND · SAINT-JACQUES · MVUGO · CHAMBON · HERNANDEZ · MOULIN

France plays with an aggressive and direct style in this 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack with speed. The goal is to use the extra numbers in the final third to overwhelm the opposition defence.

Rochet stays between the posts to organise the defence. The back line functions as a flat back four with Moulin at right back and Durand at left back. Moulin and Durand are expected to overlap the wingers to provide width. In the middle, Tran and Laine act as the central defenders to defend zonally and hold the line. Tran and Laine must be ready to step up to play an offside trap or drop into a low block if the team loses possession.

The midfield consists of a double pivot with Couturier and Bertrand. They work to shield the defence and recycle possession when the team needs to slow the tempo. One of them will often drop between the centre backs to receive the ball to help play out from the back. They are responsible for picking up runners from the opposition and protecting the space in front of Tran and Laine. The duo connects the defensive unit to the heavy attacking force ahead of them.

The front line is aggressive with two forwards in a partnership. Chambon and Hernandez act as the centre forwards to press from the front and pin the last defender. They work to find the feet of the striker or run in behind to catch the defence. Mvugo plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside, while Saint-Jacques stays wide on the right to stretch the defence and deliver early crosses. This formation creates many chances to hit in behind on the transition.

This lineup offers several tactical advantages, such as the ability to create wide overloads when Moulin or Durand push up to join the wingers. The team can also achieve high speed of transition because there are four players ready to sprint forward immediately after winning the ball. Having Chambon and Hernandez close to the opposition goal forces the defenders to stay deep, which creates more space for Couturier and Bertrand to carry the ball forward.

France uses this 4-2-4 to dominate games through relentless offensive pressure and rapid verticality. This formation is best suited for facing opponents who sit deep and can be broken down by sheer numbers and pace.
