Netherlands National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
VAN DONGEN · DE VRIES · SANDERS · PETERS · ZETKY · KUIPERS · DE LEEUW · BAKKER · MILAMBE · REGEER · ZECHIELThe Netherlands aim to play with a high press and vertical intensity using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in the final third and win the ball back high up the pitch. The goal is to keep the play moving forward quickly to catch the opponent out of position.
KUIPERS stays in goal to command the area and organize the back four. PETERS plays as the right back to push up and provide width, while DE LEEUW operates as the left back to cover the flank. In the center, BAKKER and SANDERS form a central defensive pair. BAKKER acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, while SANDERS focuses on holding the line and covering the space behind the high line. The whole unit works to squeeze the space and stay compact when the ball is lost.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. MILAMBE and VAN DONGEN occupy the two central midfield roles to bridge the gap between defense and attack. MILAMBE works to shield the defense and intercept passes, whereas VAN DONGEN is tasked to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces. These two must be ready to win the second ball and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. Their job is to recycle possession and quickly find the forwards.
The front line is incredibly aggressive with four attackers positioned to stretch the defence. ZECHIEL plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create danger, while DE VRIES stays wide on the right to spread the play. The central area features a two forward partnership with ZETKY and REGEER. ZETKY acts as a pressing centre forward to hunt the ball, while REGEER looks to make runs in behind or link up play between the lines. This attacking formation allows the team to attack in transitions and exploit gaps.
One major strength is the ability to create wide overloads and isolate wide players in one on one situations. By pushing the wingers high, the Netherlands can force the opposition back and create chances through cutbacks. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves. With ZETKY and REGEER leading the charge, the team can win the ball back and hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can recover.
This 4-2-4 formation is built for high intensity and constant offensive pressure. It is the ideal formation for games where the Netherlands need to break down a deep defending opponent.
