This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block before hitting the opposition with vertical passing once the ball is won. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle and force the opponent into wide areas where they can be trapped.
Mert guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back four works as a zonal line to maintain compactness. Udokhai operates as a ball playing defender who can step up to intercept passes, while the partner at RCB and the RB must track back to cover the wide areas. Jurasek acts as an attacking full back, pushing high to provide width while the rest of the unit holds the line to prevent long balls.
A three man midfield with a carrier provides the engine for Besiktas. Gedson operates as the primary driver who carries the ball forward to break the line, while Hadzi? sits deeper to shield the defense and win the second ball. Rafa connects the defensive and attacking lines by finding pockets of space between the opponent's units. This midfield unit works to press in a mid-block to force turnovers in central areas.
The attack is built around a lone striker, Abraham, who acts as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line. To support him, Arroyo plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create central threats. The LAM role provides additional support in the half-spaces, allowing for combinations in tight spaces. This setup creates runs in behind and allows the team to switch play quickly to the wingers.
One major advantage for Besiktas is the ability to create numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch through the crowded midfield. The formation also allows for high pressing in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger the press. This makes the team very hard to play through once they settle into their defensive block.
Besiktas uses this 4-5-1 to suffocate opponents through central congestion and rapid counter attacks. It is a formation best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their full backs.
