Starting Lineup

Costa Rica plays an aggressive, vertical style of football within a 4-2-4 formation. BRAVO and OLIVERA form the central pair, where they are tasked to win the header and cover the space behind the full backs. This back four must shift together to deny the turn to opposing attackers and keep the lines tight.

The midfield is a double pivot where CEVALLOS and CARRILLO operate in the center. These two must work tirelessly to shield the defence and cover the passing lanes. CARRILLO helps to recycle possession and link the back line to the attacking unit, while CEVALLOS looks to carry the ball forward and press aggressively to win it back high up the pitch. Their job is to protect the central zone so the full backs can push higher up the pitch.

Costa Rica uses four attackers to stretch the opposition defence. MORA plays on the left wing to hug the touchline, while MORALES occupies the right wing to pull the defenders wide. In the center, RODRIGUEZ and VIERA operate as a two man strike partnership. These two forwards work to pin the last defender and make constant runs in behind to exploit any gaps. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball, allowing the team to win the second ball and start a new attack.

This formation offers a clear advantage through numerical superiority in the attacking third. By using four players up front, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations for MORA and MORALES. Additionally, the lineup allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, which can squeeze the space and force the opposition into making mistakes.
