The midfield operates as a central pairing with a double pivot to control the center. MOUTINHO and ROCHEMBACK sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and win the second ball. MOUTINHO acts as the deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and switch play, while ROCHEMBACK looks to intercept passes and drive forward with the ball. Ahead of them, ROGÉRIO and BARBOSA play as the wide midfielders. They are tasked to track back when defending and carry the ball forward to support the attack.

Sporting CP employs two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. SÁ PINTO and LIÉDSON act as the primary attacking threats. SÁ PINTO often plays as a pressing centre forward to force a long ball from the opposition, while LIÉDSON plays as a target man to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. The wide players, ROGÉRIO and BARBOSA, look to cut inside to create central presence, while the full backs push high to provide crosses. This creates combinations to hit in behind the defense.
