MALAFEEV acts as the last line of defense behind a back five. TYMOSHCHUK sits in the middle of the defensive line to command the area and win the header. KRIZANAC and SHIROKOV operate as wide centre-backs to cover the channels and provide cover when the wing backs push up. ANYUKOV and SIRL act as attacking wing backs, providing the necessary width to stretch the play. This defensive unit stays compact to protect the center, with the wing backs dropping back to form a flat back five when the team sits deep.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to control the central zone. DENISOV works to shield the defense and intercept passes, while ZYRYANOV looks to carry the ball forward and link the back line to the attackers. These two players are responsible for recycling possession and ensuring the team does not get caught in central transitions. They must work hard to cover the ground between the defense and the front three to prevent the opponent from playing through the lines.

Zenit utilizes three attackers across the front to pin the opposition back line. FAYZULIN acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and provide a focal point for long passes. ARSHAVIN and TEKKE operate as wide attackers, with ARSHAVIN often looking to cut inside to create chances. The formation is designed to create runs in behind and allow the wing backs to overlap the winger. This creates constant pressure on the opponent's full backs through combinations in the wide areas.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads from the attacking wing backs. When ANYUKOV and SIRL push up, they force the opposing wingers to track back, creating a numerical advantage in the attacking half. Another strength is the compactness when defending in a mid-block, which makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the middle. The team is also capable of hitting in behind on the transition to catch a high line off guard.
