Shakhtar Football Formation
Starting Lineup
SRNA · KUCHER · CHYHRYNSKIY · RAT · LEWANDOWSKI · ILSINHO · JÁDSON · WILLIAM · LUIZ ADRIANO · PYATOV · FERNANDINHOShakhtar relies on a heavy verticality to hurt opponents in transition, using a 4-5-1 formation to control the middle of the pitch. The team looks to win the ball in the center and immediately look to find the lone striker or runners from deep. This setup is built to play with high intensity and directness, forcing opponents into mistakes.
In goal, PYATOV acts as the last line of defense. The back line operates as a flat back four, with KUCHER and CHYHRYNSKIY acting as the central pairing. KUCHER is strong in the air and provides the physical presence needed to clear lines, while CHYHRYNSKIY focuses on covering the space behind the defense. SRNA and RAT provide width as full backs, looking to support the attack and spread the play wide when the team has possession.
The midfield is a five man unit that dominates the central zones. FERNANDINHO and LEWANDOWSKI form a double pivot to shield the defense, with FERNANDINHO often dropping deep to help play out from the back. WILLIAM and ILSINHO operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, making runs into the box to support the play. JÁDSON plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, acting as the main creative force to play through the lines.
Luiz Adriano leads the line as a lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball to allow the midfield to join the attack. He often drops deep to link up play or pulls wide to create space for JÁDSON to run into. The front line presses from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. When Shakhtar wins the ball, the wingers and attacking midfielders immediately push up to support Luiz Adriano in a rapid transition.
A major strength of this Shakhtar lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The team can also use the speed of transition to catch defenders out of position. By having JÁDSON move between the lines, the team can isolate defenders in one on one situations during quick breaks.
This 4-5-1 formation provides a compact defensive block that is hard to break down. It is best suited for matches against teams that hold a lot of possession, allowing Shakhtar to sit deep and strike on the break.
