Starting Lineup

TRACEY · MURATI · MITCHELL · HEIJER (ROGERS) · BOXALL · LOBO (J. LAGOS) · YOO (DE VRIES) · GARRIGA (ZHOU) · ILICH · MANICKUM (KILKOLLY) · BEVAN

New Zealand looks to play a defensively solid style of football using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and react to the opposition. The team focuses on staying compact and waiting for the right moment to hit the opponent with quick transitions.

TRACEY stays on the line to guard the goal. The defensive unit operates with a back five that can shift into a narrow defensive block. HEIJER acts as the central defender to anchor the line and win the header. MITCHELL and BOXALL play as wide centre-backs to cover the spaces and pick up runners. LOBO and MURATI function as attacking wing backs to provide much needed width. While MURATI stays deeper to cover the flank, LOBO pushes up to join the attack.

In the middle of the pitch, GARRIGA and ILICH form a double pivot. They work to shield the defense and protect the central zone. GARRIGA is tasked to carry the ball forward and drive into the midfield. ILICH connects the defense to the attack by playing through the lines and finding the feet of the striker. Both players must press in a mid-block to stop the opponent from playing short from the back.

The attack features three players positioned across the front. BEVAN plays as a central striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. MANICKUM and YOO act as wide wingers to stretch the defense. MANICKUM looks to cut inside to create space for the overlap from LOBO. YOO works to run in behind the defensive line to hit in behind on the transition. This trio helps to press from the front to force a long ball.

A major tactical strength for New Zealand is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of the wing backs. Having LOBO and MURATI push high allows the team to spread wide and switch play quickly. The formation also offers immense compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.

The 5-2-3 formation provides a reliable way to defend against high possession teams. It is most effective when the team needs to sit deep and counter at pace.
