Starting Lineup

Marseille prefers to play a direct style focused on defensive solidity and quick breaks using a 5-2-3. This formation is designed to absorb pressure and then strike through rapid transitions. The midfield works as a double pivot to shield the back five. Højbjerg and Rabiot occupy the central areas to control the tempo. Højbjerg is known for his pressing intensity and works to win the ball high up the pitch. Rabiot connects the defense to the attack by playing short from the back and moving into the half spaces. This duo must stay disciplined to prevent the opponent from playing through the lines or finding the gaps between the midfield and the defense.

In the attacking phase, Marseille uses three players across the front. Gouiri acts as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender. Maupay and Greenwood provide width, with Maupay looking to cut inside from the left. Greenwood uses his dribbling style to beat his man on the right and create chances. The wing backs, Lirola and Merlin, overlap the wingers to provide crosses. The forwards look to combine in tight spaces or knock it in behind the defense.

One major strength is the ability to provide wide overloads from overlapping full backs. The presence of three central defenders allows the team to defend zonally and stay compact. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. Another advantage is the speed of transition, allowing the team to hit in behind on the transition once the midfield wins possession and spreads the play wide.
