Celje aims to be a defensively solid unit that relies on quick transitions to catch opponents off guard. This lineup uses a 5-2-3 formation to maintain a heavy presence in the defensive third while leaving space for wide players to exploit. The goal is to sit deep and invite pressure before hitting in behind the opposition line.

Sluga acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit works as a back five with Zabukovnik acting as the central defender to hold the line. To his sides, Tutyskinas and Vuklisevic operate as the left and right centre-backs to cover the space and win the second ball. Karnicnik and Nieto push up as attacking wing backs to provide width and deliver crosses. This formation relies on the wing backs to overlap when the team has the ball and track back quickly when they lose it.

In the center of the pitch, Avdyli and Kvesic form a double pivot. Their main job is to shield the defence and pick up runners from the opposition. Avdyli can carry the ball forward to drive into the middle third, while Kvesic works to recycle possession and protect the space in front of the centre-backs. They act as the link between the defensive line and the front three, looking to find the feet of the striker or switch play to the wings.

The attacking front line features three players working in close combinations. Noordanus acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the flanks, Iosifov and Sturm operate as wide attackers who look to cut inside and create goal scoring chances. Iosifov and Sturm will pull wide to stretch the defence or tuck in to create overloads in the half spaces. The team looks to break quickly once the ball is won, aiming to hit in behind on the transition with runs from the wingers.

This Celje lineup offers significant defensive compactness when they drop into a low block. The five defenders make it very hard for opponents to find space between the lines. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads as Karnicnik and Nieto push high to support the attackers. This allows the team to exploit the flanks and send early deliveries into the box for Noordanus to attack.

This 5-2-3 formation is built to absorb pressure and strike with clinical precision. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
