Starting Lineup

FC Porto looks to control games through a direct and vertical style of play. This 5-2-3 formation relies on a strong defensive foundation to launch quick attacks. The lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and wait for the right moment to hit the opposition in transition. By using a back five, the team remains compact and hard to break down while maintaining enough numbers to push forward when needed.

Helton guards the goal while the defensive unit holds a narrow defensive block. Fernando sits at the center of the back three to provide leadership and cover. The wide defenders, Sapuraru as the right wing back and Pereira as the left wing back, provide the necessary width. Sapuraru and Pereira are expected to push high to support the attack but must track back to help the three central defenders.

The midfield consists of a two-man engine room. Moutinho operates as a deep-lying playmaker who can recycle possession and find teammates with his passing range. Guarín works alongside him to drive forward with the ball and provides extra physical presence. These two connect the defense to the front three by receiving the ball from the center-backs and playing through the lines. They must be ready to press aggressively to win the ball high and prevent the opposition from building play through the middle.

In the final third, FC Porto uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Hulk plays on the right as an inverted winger who cuts inside to use his powerful dribbling and shooting. Varela stays wide on the left to provide width and cross the ball into the box. Falcão acts as the lone striker and uses his movement to find space between the defenders. The forwards are expected to press the opposition back line to force a long ball and win the second ball in the attacking half.

One major advantage of this setup is the ability to create wide overloads when Sapuraru or Pereira overlap the wingers. The team also benefits from a very compact defensive block that makes it difficult for opponents to find gaps in the middle. Having players like Moutinho and Guarín allows for a quick transition from defending to attacking, often catching the opponent out of position.
