Ajax relies on a heavy defensive block and direct transitions, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. Rich stays between the posts to organize the unit. The defensive line consists of a back five that can sit deep to protect the central zone. Zealous and Lawz act as the central defenders, while Walker provides cover to sweep behind the line. To provide width, Carlos operates as a right wing back and Cole acts as a left wing back, both tasked with tracking runners and providing an outlet when the team wins the ball.

The midfield operates as a flat four to keep the lines close together. KBA and Woodsy sit in the center to protect the back five and win the second ball in the middle third. KBA focuses on screening the defense while Woodsy tries to carry the ball forward to link the lines. On the flanks, Melo and TBA occupy the wide areas to track opposing wingers and ensure the team holds a compact shape when out of possession.

Ajax uses a lone striker in Norton to lead the line. Norton acts as a pressing centre forward to force the opposition back line into mistakes and provide a focal point for long balls. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition, with Cole and Carlos pushing up to support the attack. When the ball is won, the aim is to get the ball wide or directly to Norton to allow for quick combinations or to exploit space behind the opponent.

One main advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending in a mid-block or low block. The narrow defensive block makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads once the team transitions into an attacking phase, stretching the defense quickly.
