Athletic looks to play a direct and vertical style of football using a 5-2-3 formation. The goal for Athletic is to use the width provided by wing backs to stretch the opposition while maintaining a compact block. This lineup relies on quick transitions to punish teams that leave space behind their defensive line.

Iraizoz acts as the last line of defense behind a back five. Iturraspe sits in the middle of the defensive line to command the area and win headers. Amorebieta and Martínez operate as the wide center backs to provide cover when the wing backs push forward. Aurtenetxe and Iraola play as attacking wing backs who must cover the entire flank. They provide the width in attack but must track back quickly to defend against wide runners. The unit aims to hold a low block when under pressure or squeeze the space when they win the ball.

The midfield consists of a two man pairing with Herrera and De Marcos. Herrera acts as a carrier to drive the ball forward and connect the defense to the attack. De Marcos works alongside him to press aggressively and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. This duo must work hard to cover the gaps left when the wing backs move high. They often sit in a mid-block to deny the turn of opposition playmakers.

In the final third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defense. LLORENTE operates as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line. Muniain plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create chances. Susaeta stays wide on the right to provide crosses and stretch the play. These three forwards look to combine in tight spaces or hit in behind on the transition.

One major strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Iraola and Aurtenetxe overlap the wingers. The team also shows great compactness when defending in a narrow defensive block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center.

This formation creates a hard unit to break down through the middle. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to defend deep and strike quickly on the counter.
