Inter relies on a high press and direct verticality using a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The Inter squad aims to use their numbers in the middle to control the tempo and drive the ball forward quickly once they regain possession.

Yann Sommer acts as the foundation in goal, providing security for the back line. The defensive unit operates with a back three, featuring De Vrij as the central defender who provides aerial strength and covers the space behind his partners. Bastoni operates as the left centre-back and looks to carry the ball forward, while Darmian plays as the right centre-back to keep the line compact. This defensive trio works together to defend zonally and maintain a high line to support the press.

The midfield functions through a three man midfield with a carrier and deep layers. Asllani sits in the defensive role to shield the back three and intercept passes. Barella acts as a high energy engine in the right central midfield role, pressing aggressively and making late runs into the box. Mkhitaryan operates on the left side of the midfield trio to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Dumfries and Dimarco act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and overlap the central midfielders.

The attack uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition defence. Lautaro Martínez works as a pressing centre-forward, constantly hunting the ball and looking for runs in behind. Marcus Thuram plays alongside him to create combinations in tight spaces and use his strength to hold up the ball. The wing backs, Dumfries and Dimarco, provide the width needed to pull the opposition wide, allowing the two strikers to attack the space between the centre-backs.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through wide overloads from the attacking wing backs and numerical superiority in midfield. By having Dumfries and Dimarco push forward, Inter can create situations where they outnumber the opposition full backs. The team also benefits from a high press in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back.

Inter uses this 3-5-2 to dominate territory through intense pressing and quick transitions. It is a formation best suited for games where the team needs to control the central areas and punish opponents in behind.
