Sevilla Football Formation
Starting Lineup
MARIANO · RAMI · DANIEL CARRIÇO · ESCUDERO · KRICHOWISK · NZONZI · COKE · BANEGA · VITOLO · GAMEIRO · SORIASevilla focuses on a compact defensive identity through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a reactive style of football, sitting in a mid-block to deny space and looking to strike quickly during transitions. The goal is to stay organized and force the opponent into wide areas where they are less dangerous.
SORIA stays between the posts to organize the back line. A flat back four serves as the foundation, with RAMI and DANIEL CARRIÇO acting as the central defenders. RAMI uses his aerial strength to defend long balls, while DANIEL CARRIÇO provides cover to sweep behind the line. MARIANO and ESCUDERO act as the wide defenders. While MARIANO tends to stay more conservative to protect the flank, ESCUDERO can push forward to provide width. The unit works to keep the lines tight and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.
The midfield is a five man unit that congests the central areas. NZONZI and KRICHOWISK work as a double pivot to shield the defense. One focuses on winning the ball and breaking up play, while KRICHOWISK helps to cover the spaces left by the advancing players. BANEGA plays as a central playmaker who drops deep to receive the ball and plays through the lines with his wide passing range. COKE and VITOLO operate in the half spaces. COKE makes late runs into the box to support the attack, while VITOLO pulls wide to stretch the defense. This midfield connects the defense to the attack by recycling possession and winning the second ball.
Up front, Sevilla utilizes a lone striker in GAMEIRO. He functions as a pressing centre-forward, working hard to pin the last defender and disrupt the opposition build up. GAMEIRO is tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of the midfield as they move forward. The attack is built in transition, with the team looking to move the ball quickly to the wide players. VITOLO and COKE look to cut inside or deliver crosses to the box to create chances. These movements are designed to create runs in behind and exploit the gaps left by an advancing opponent.
A major strength of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. By sitting in a mid-block, Sevilla makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. Another advantage is the numerical superiority in the central midfield, as NZONZI, KRICHOWISK, and BANEGA can congest the middle to cut off the passing lane. This allows the team to win the ball back and transition at pace.
This 4-5-1 formation makes Sevilla a very difficult team to break down. It is best suited for matches against teams that hold high possession, allowing the team to sit deep and hit on the counter.
