Starting Lineup

Focusing on defensive solidity and hard work, Atlético uses a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to be compact and difficult to break down, relying on a disciplined defensive block to frustrate opponents before hitting them in transition. The team aims to squeeze the space between the lines and win the second ball to maintain control of the game.

Jan Oblak guards the goal, acting as the final line of defense. The back four consists of a flat line where Lucas and VRSALIKO operate as full backs. VRSALIKO pushes forward to provide width while Lucas maintains a more conservative position. In the middle, GODÍN and GIMÉNEZ form a central pairing that is dominant in the air and strong in one on one duels. They work to stay close together and deny the turn to any oncoming attackers.

The midfield works in a bank of four to protect the center. GABI (C), serving as the captain, sits in a deep position to shield the defense and anchor the team. Alongside him, SAÚL acts as a carrier to move the ball from deep areas. KOKE and CORREA occupy the wider channels to link the midfield and attack. KOKE is known for his passing range and work rate, while CORREA provides energy to press the opposition in the middle third.

In the attacking phase, the team uses two forwards in a partnership. DIEGO COSTA acts as a target man to hold up the ball and battle with center backs. GRIEZMANN plays as a second striker in the hole, often dropping into midfield to collect the ball and create play. This movement allows GRIEZMANN to find space between the lines. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball, allowing the Atlético defense to step up and win the ball back.

One major strength of this formation is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when the midfield wins the ball and immediately looks for GRIEZMANN or DIEGO COSTA. By staying narrow, the unit can quickly shift to overload the side where the ball is played.
