Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
PAPASTATHOPOULOS · KOSCIELNY · MONREAL · MAITLAND-NILES · TORREIRA · XHAKA · KOLASINAC · ÖZIL · LACAZETTE · AUBAMEYANG · CECHArsenal aims to control games through a high press and quick vertical transitions using a 3-5-2. This formation is built to dominate the middle of the pitch and use aggressive numbers to win the ball back high up the pitch. By packing the center, Arsenal can squeeze the space between lines and look to hit teams on the break with speed.
Petr Cech stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back three consists of Monreal as the left centre-back, Koscielny in the middle, and Papastathopoulos on the right. Monreal and Papastathopoulos act as wide centre-backs who can shift to cover the flanks, while Koscielny acts as the central pillar to defend the middle. This unit works to stay compact and can step up to help the midfield when the team wins the ball.
The midfield operates as a dense block to control the center of the park. Torreira sits in a deep role to shield the defence and intercept passes, while Xhaka acts as the main carrier to move the ball from deep. Kolasinac plays a more combative role on the left side to win second balls, and Maitland-Niles provides energy on the right to connect the lines. Mesut Özil operates in the left half-space as a playmaker, looking to find the feet of the strikers or play through the lines with his vision and passing range.
Arsenal uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. Aubameyang plays as the left striker, using his immense pace to run in behind the defence, while Lacazette plays as the right striker to hold up the ball and link up play. The two attackers press the opposition back line to force a long ball. This front duo relies on the service from Özil and the runners from the midfield to create chances in transition.
One major advantage of this lineup is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. The presence of five players in the central zone allows Arsenal to win the second ball frequently. Another strength is the ability to create overloads in the half-spaces, using Özil and Kolasinac to pin the defenders. This makes it difficult for opponents to defend against both the central runners and the wide players.
This 3-5-2 formation is designed for teams that want to dominate possession while remaining dangerous on the counter. It is best suited for games against opponents who play with a narrow midfield and struggle to deal with quick vertical passes.
