Starting Lineup

Cucurella · Gusto · Colwill · Adarabioyo · Delap · Nkunku · Palmer · Neto · Dewsbury · E. Fernández · R. Sánchez

Chelsea looks to control the game through heavy pressure and aggressive positioning in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the center of the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The team builds play through high intensity to sustain pressure in the final third and force errors from the opposition.

R. Sánchez stays between the posts to oversee the defensive unit. The defense operates with a two man back line consisting of Adarabioyo and Colwill. Colwill acts as a ball playing defender with a wide passing range to start attacks from deep. Adarabioyo provides cover and stays close to his partner to protect the center. They often play a high line to squeeze the space and support the midfield during the buildup.

The midfield is a crowded five man unit designed to congest the center of the pitch. Gusto and Cucurella sit as the defensive pair to shield the two center backs and protect the back line. E. Fernández acts as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and move the ball forward. Dewsbury works alongside E. Fernández to drive forward with the ball and carry it into the half spaces. Palmer operates as an attacking ten behind the striker to create chances through his passing range and dribbling.

Three attackers lead the way in the final third. Delap acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Nkunku plays as an inverted winger on the left and cuts inside to find scoring opportunities. Neto stays wide on the right to spread the pitch and deliver crosses. The front three press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition and win the second ball. They move in combinations to find ways to break the line and create chances in tight spaces.

Chelsea gains numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch which allows them to control the tempo of the game. This formation offers the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back quickly. They also use the width of Neto and Nkunku to stretch the defence and create space for the central players.

This 2-5-3 formation is built for high aggression and heavy possession. It works best against teams that try to play out from the back and struggle with high pressure.
