Starting Lineup

Venezia want to control the game through high intensity and ball dominance in a 2-5-3. This formation is built to play an aggressive game where the team tries to win it back high up the pitch. By committing many players to the attack, the team intends to pin the opposition back and create chaos in their defensive third through constant pressure.

The goalkeeper, 1, must be ready to sweep behind a high line to catch any long balls. The back line is a narrow pair of central defenders, 4 and 3, who must hold the line and defend large amounts of space. Since there are no full backs, 4 and 3 need to be extremely quick to intercept runners and cover for the midfielders. This defensive unit works to squeeze the space and force the opponent into wide areas where they can be trapped.

The midfield is the core of the Venezia lineup. 2 acts as a single pivot to shield the defense and receive the ball from 4 and 3 to start the build up. Moving higher, 5 and 6 act as a central pairing to drive forward with the ball and win the second ball in the middle of the park. The attacking midfielders, 8 and 7, occupy the half-spaces to link the play and arrive late into the box. This group of five allows the team to pass through the lines and control the rhythm of the match effectively.

The front line uses three attackers to keep the defense under constant pressure. The striker, 11, works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the midfielders. Wide players 10 and 9 hug the touchline to spread the defense wide, which creates room in the center. Both 10 and 9 will often cut inside to combine in tight spaces or look for a shot. This attacking group is designed to hit in behind the defense on the transition and exploit any gaps.

This formation offers clear tactical advantages, such as significant numerical superiority in the midfield. By having five players in the center, Venezia can easily win the second ball and recycle possession to keep the pressure on. The lineup also creates wide overloads when 8 and 7 push up to support 10 and 9. This ability to stretch the defense makes it very difficult for the opposition to stay compact while defending.

The 2-5-3 is a high-risk formation that relies on intense pressing and quick ball movement. It is best suited for situations where Venezia faces a team that sits deep and needs to be broken down through sheer numbers.
