Inter focuses on a vertical and defensively solid style of play with a 5-3-2. This formation is built to sit deep and wait for the opposition to overextend. The goal is to stay compact and then hit teams on the break. This lineup allows the team to be hard to break down while staying ready to counter at pace.

Sommer stays on his line to command the area. The defense functions as a back five. Palacios sits in the middle of the central defenders to provide height and strength. Militão acts as the right centre back and Bastoni plays as the left centre back. Bastoni uses his passing range to play out from the back and find teammates in the middle. Frimpong acts as an attacking wing back on the right to stretch the defence. Gvardiol plays as the left wing back to provide cover and support. The unit works together to maintain a narrow defensive block.

The midfield works as a three man midfield with a carrier and a playmaker. Çalhanoglu sits centrally to recycle possession and find the feet of the striker. Barella plays as an inverted eight who drives forward with the ball to connect the lines. He uses his work rate to press aggressively and win the ball. Kvaratskhelia plays in the left channel to help the midfield transition from defense to attack. This group aims to squeeze the space and win the second ball in the center of the pitch.

Inter uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. Lautaro works as a pressing striker with high intensity to force mistakes. Gyokeres stays close to him to create link up play between the lines. They look to run in behind or play quick combinations to split the defence with a through ball. Frimpong and Gvardiol push up high to provide width. This creates situations to whip it in or deliver early crosses for the strikers.

The lineup offers massive wide overloads when Frimpong and Gvardiol move up the pitch. This forces the opposition to pull wide and leaves gaps in the middle. Another strength is the compactness when defending in a low block. The players stay close together to deny the turn and block the runner. The team also relies on speed of transition once the ball is won.

The 5-3-2 formation provides Inter with a very solid foundation. It is best suited for games against heavy possession teams where they can defend deep and strike on the transition.
