Starting Lineup

Šeško (Havertz) · Saka (Madueke) · Leão (Martinelli) · Rice (Merino) · Ødegaard (Eze) · Timber (White) · Saliba (Mosquera) · Gabriel (Calafiori) · Lewis-Skelly (Hato) · Raya (Kepa) · Zubimendi (Nørgaard)

Arsenal focuses on verticality and directness through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and move quickly toward the goal. By using three central defenders, the team looks to control the middle of the pitch while maintaining a strong base to launch attacks.

Raya sits between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back three consists of Zubimendi, Saliba, and Gabriel, who provide a massive presence in the air and a solid wall in the center. Saliba and Gabriel act as ball playing defenders who can play out from the back, while Zubimendi holds the center to cover any runs in behind. On the flanks, Timber acts as an attacking wing back to push high, while Lewis-Skelly covers the left side to provide width and track back when needed.

A double pivot forms the heart of the midfield with Rice and Ødegaard. Rice acts as the primary shield for the defense, using his tackling and physical presence to win the second ball. Ødegaard works more as a creator who can carry the ball forward and play through the lines to find the attackers. This pair links the defense to the front three, ensuring the team can transition from a mid-block into a sharp attacking phase.

The attacking front line is built around Šeško, who acts as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender. Saka operates as an inverted winger on the right, often looking to cut inside and find space in the half-spaces. On the left, Leão provides immense width and dribbling to stretch the defense. This front three works in combinations, with Saka and Leão looking to isolate wide players in one on one situations while Šeško makes runs in behind to finish.

Arsenal gains a significant advantage from the wide overloads created by Timber and Lewis-Skelly when they push up to support the wingers. The formation also provides compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders can sit deep and squeeze the space. This setup allows for great speed of transition, catching opponents off balance when the ball is won back high up the pitch.

The 5-2-3 formation provides a robust defensive base while allowing for rapid, direct attacks. This lineup is best suited for facing teams that play with high lines or teams that struggle to handle quick transitions.
