Racioppi (Ruberto-(Godwin)) · Sow (Biner) · Hajrizi (Kronig) · Lavanchy (Dubosson) · Hefti (Mulazzi-Cipriano) · Kololli (Chipperfield-Miranchuk) · Baltazar (Joseph-Moulin) · Lukembila (Bouchlarhem) · Chouaref (Berdayes-(Shala)) · Nivokazi (Djokic) · Boteli (Ndoye)Sion aims to stay compact and hit opponents on the break using a 5-3-2. This formation is built to play a counter attacking style where the team sits deep to deny space behind the defense and then moves forward quickly once the ball is won.
Racioppi guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back five consists of Baltazar acting as the central anchor while Sow and Hajrizi sit on either side of him to provide cover. Lavanchy and Hefti operate as attacking wing backs who must cover the entire flank. Lavanchy pushes high to provide width, while Hefti tracks back to support the defensive block when the team loses possession. The central defenders aim to win the second ball and clear the lines during sustained pressure.
The midfield utilizes a three man midfield with a carrier to control the center of the pitch. Kololli sits in the middle to connect the defensive and attacking lines. To his right, Chouaref works to drive forward with the ball and carry it into the final third. Lukembila operates on the left to help press in a mid block and win the ball back. This trio works to squeeze the space between the lines and ensures the team remains hard to play through.
In the attacking phase, Sion relies on two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defense. Nivokazi and Boteli work together to lead the press from the front. Nivokazi can drop slightly to link up play, while Boteli looks to run in behind the opposition back line. The wing backs, Lavanchy and Hefti, provide the width needed to spread the defense wide, creating space for the two strikers to exploit. They often look to hit in behind on the transition to catch the opposition out of position.
Sion gains a tactical advantage through their defensive compactness when defending in a low block. The five man back line makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps in the middle. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads when Lavanchy and Hefti push up simultaneously to support the attackers. This allows the side to quickly transition from a defensive stance to an attacking one.
The 5-3-2 formation gives Sion a reliable way to defend deep and strike with speed. It is best suited for matches against teams that hold high possession and leave space behind their defenders.
