Lunga and Mudau act as ball playing defenders who must be comfortable playing out from the back under pressure. Because there are no traditional full backs, these two must be ready to step up and engage attackers early, requiring excellent timing to avoid being bypassed.

The midfield is the engine of this Sundowns lineup, using a five man block to overwhelm the opposition. Johannes and Mdunyelwa act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and provide a base for play. Lebusa, Modiba, and Cupido occupy the advanced central roles to create a boxy presence that dominates the middle third. Lebusa and Modiba work to connect the defensive line to the attack, while Cupido and the others press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. This crowded midfield makes it difficult for opponents to play through the center.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition. Mashego plays as a wide winger on the left, while Morena operates on the right, both ready to cut inside or find space when the ball is switched. Mothiba acts as the focal point, working to hold up the ball and find teammates. The wingers aim to isolate defenders in one on one situations, often looking for runs in behind or to receive cutbacks once they get to the byline.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to recycle possession easily. The concentrated number of players in the center makes it very hard for teams to play through the middle.
