Sutalo and Baas play as ball playing defenders who need to stay alert to long balls. Because the formation lacks traditional full backs, these two must hold the line and be ready to step up to intercept passes.

The midfield is the engine of this Ajax system, utilizing five players to dominate the center. Gaaei and Hato operate in a double pivot to shield the defense and protect the two center backs. Taylor and Mannsverk act as inverted eights, working to connect the defense to the attack and find pockets of space. Klaassen plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to arrive late into the box and play through the lines. This midfield unit works to win the second ball and recycle possession to maintain pressure.

In the attacking phase, the team uses three players across the front to pin the last defender. Godts and Berghuis act as wide wingers who stay wide to stretch the defense, while Brobbey plays as a pressing centre-forward. Brobbey is tasked to hold up the ball and link up play with the midfielders. The movement of Godts and Berghuis creates space for Klaassen to run into, while the wingers look to get to the byline and whip it in for the striker.
