Starting Lineup

Hato · Sutalo · Baas · Gaaei · Brobbey · Berghuis · Godts · Klaassen · Taylor · Mannsverk · Jaros

Ajax aims to control the game through high intensity and verticality in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to pin the opposition back by using a heavy presence in the middle of the pitch. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately look to exploit the space behind the opponent's defensive line.

Jaros acts as the lone man in goal to protect the small defensive unit. Sutalo and Baas form a narrow back two that must be ready to step up and squeeze the space when the team presses. These central defenders play out from the back to initiate attacks. They must remain extremely disciplined to prevent long balls from breaking the line, often needing to cover wide areas if the midfield is bypassed.

The midfield is the engine of this Ajax formation, using a five man unit to dominate the center. Hato and Gaaei sit as a double pivot to shield the two center backs. Mannsverk and Taylor operate in the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack, with Mannsverk looking to drive forward with the ball to break lines. Klaassen plays as the attacking ten, looking to arrive late into the box and find pockets of space between the opponent's lines.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. Godts and Berghuis act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to provide width. Godts is tasked to cut inside and create chances, while Berghuis looks to isolate his marker in one on one situations. Brobbey acts as the central striker, using his strength to hold up the ball and lay it off to the runners. The attack relies on quick combinations and movement to unbalance the back line.

One major advantage of this lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to recycle possession easily. The presence of five players in the middle makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. Additionally, the high press from the front three can trigger a press in a mid-block that forces the opponent to play long balls, which Sutalo and Baas can then win.

This 2-5-3 formation is built to dominate possession and suffocate the opposition in their own half. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and struggle to track runners through the middle.
