Baumann guards the goal for Hoffenheim as the lone man in the box. In front of him, Bernardo and Kabak operate as a two-man central defensive unit. They must play with a high line to squeeze the space and keep the team compact. Bernardo and Kabak need to be ready to step up to intercept passes or cover wide areas if the midfield gets bypassed. Gendrey and Prass form a double pivot. They provide the necessary stability to allow the players ahead of them to push forward while working to shield the two defenders and recycle possession. Ahead of them, Stach and Grillitsch act as the creative engines. Stach can drive forward with the ball to break the line, while Grillitsch uses his passing range to link the defense to the attack. This four-man midfield group must press aggressively to win the ball high.

Four players act as an attacking unit tasked with stretching the defence. M. Berisha and Hlozek operate as wide wingers, with M. Berisha looking to get to the byline and whip it in. Hlozek stays wide to spread the play. In the center, Kramaric and Asllani act as a striking partnership. Kramaric uses his link-up play to find the feet of the striker and pull defenders out of position. They often look to hit in behind on the transition or play one-twos to penetrate the box.

Massive attacking pressure is provided by this formation. Having four forwards creates constant threats and makes it hard for the opponent to defend the width and the center at the same time. Ability to press from the front allows the team to win it back high up the pitch. This creates a high chance to break quickly and find goal-scoring opportunities before the opposition can set their defensive block.
