SK Sturm seeks to dominate through an aggressive and vertical style of play. This lineup utilizes a 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm the opposition in the final third. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and move through the lines with speed to catch the opponent out of position.

Khudyakov stands between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit sits with a very high line, consisting of only two central defenders in Oermann and Aiwu. Both Oermann and Aiwu must be ready to cover large spaces and sweep behind a high line when the team loses possession. They act as the last line of defense before the goalkeeper, often needing to intercept long balls and win the second ball. Because there are only two in the back, they must hold a narrow defensive block to prevent being split by through balls.

The midfield is the engine of SK Sturm, featuring five players who control the center. Johnston and Lavalee form a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Ahead of them, Chukwuani and Gorenc Stankovic operate as two tens in the half-spaces to link the play. Kiteishvili plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of the forward or arrive late into the box. This midfield group must press aggressively to win the ball high and prevent the opponent from playing out from the back.

In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Wlodarczyk acts as a pressing centre-forward, leading the line and trying to pin the last defender. Rozga and Horvat act as wide wingers who pull wide to provide width. Rozga tends to cut inside to create more central presence, while Horvat looks to get to the byline and deliver early crosses. This formation creates many runs in behind and allows the players to combine in tight spaces to break the lines.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, such as numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By flooding the central areas, the team can control the tempo and press in pairs. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads when the midfielders push up to support the wingers. This allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations or hit in behind on the transition with speed.

The 2-5-3 formation is a high-risk system designed for relentless attacking. It is best suited for matches where SK Sturm needs to break down a deep low block through heavy pressure.
