Starting Lineup

Strunz · Seidl · Radulovic · Sangaré · Amane · Grgic · J. Auer · Oswald · Horn · Marcelin · Hedl

SK Rapid often look to defend in a compact block before hitting teams on the break. This 5-2-3 formation is built to be defensively solid while providing width through the wing backs. The team relies on a narrow central block to force the opposition wide before winning the ball back to start a quick transition.

Hedl sits in goal to command the area. The back five consists of Grgic as the central defender, with Marcelin and Horn acting as the wide centre-backs to cover the spaces. Oswald and J. Auer operate as attacking wing backs, pushing high up the pitch to provide width. Marcelin and Horn must hold the line and win headers to clear the lines. The unit works to stay close together to deny the turn to opposing attackers.

The midfield works as a two-man unit with Amane and Sangaré. They must work hard to protect the back five and cover the half-spaces. Amane and Sangaré need to win the second ball and recycle possession quickly. When the team wins the ball, they try to carry the ball forward to connect the defense to the front three. They must also track back to help the wing backs when the team loses possession.

Up front, SK Rapid use three attackers. Strunz acts as the lone striker, looking to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Seidl and Radulovic play as wide wingers, with Seidl on the left and Radulovic on the right. These two will often cut inside to create space for Oswald and J. Auer to overlap the winger. The front line aims to press the opposition back line to force a long ball.

This formation offers significant advantages in terms of defensive compactness and wide overloads. By using Oswald and J. Auer, the team can stretch the defence and create two on one situations against opposition full backs. The defensive block is very hard to break down because Grgic, Marcelin, and Horn create a narrow wall that is difficult to play through the lines.

The 5-2-3 formation provides a heavy defensive base with the ability to break quickly in transition. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession, allowing the players to sit deep and hit them on the transition.
