St. Pauli Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Gandalf · Frodo · Legolas · Aragorn · Faramir · Boromir · Gimli · Peregrino · Samvise · Théoden · MeriadocSt. Pauli aims to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly to catch the opposition out of position. This 5-2-3 formation is built to play vertical football through rapid transitions. The team wants to pin the opposition in their own half by using a high press to force turnovers and immediately look to play through the lines.
Gandalf stays between the posts to command the box and clear the lines when needed. The defensive unit operates with a back five where Gimli acts as the central anchor to win the second ball. Aragorn and Boromir play as the wide centre-backs, providing cover for the space when the wing backs push forward. Peregrino and Legolas act as attacking wing backs to provide width and stretch the defence. They must maintain a narrow defensive block when the team drops into a low block to deny the turn of the opposition attackers.
The midfield functions with a two-man unit consisting of Meriadoc and Samvise. Meriadoc works to shield the defence and recycle possession to keep the team moving forward. Samvise has the license to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive unit with the attackers. They need to press in pairs to squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch. Their primary task is to win the second ball and quickly switch play to the wide areas.
In the attacking third, St. Pauli uses three attackers to create constant pressure. Théoden plays as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and hold up the ball. Frodo and Faramir operate as wide attackers who often cut inside to create central threats. This movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the wing backs to overlap the winger. The team looks to break quickly and deliver early crosses into the box to catch the defence off guard.
One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Legolas and Peregrino. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back high up the pitch. This formation allows for incredible speed of transition, making them lethal when they can hit in behind on the transition.
This formation is built for high intensity and rapid vertical play. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
