SK Rapid Football Formation
Starting Lineup
J. Auer · Bolla · Raux Yao · Cvetkovic · Kara · Seidl · Radulovic · Grgic · Sangaré · Oswald · HedlSK Rapid focuses on a direct and vertical way of playing through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to hit teams in transition and use wide areas to stretch the opposition. The team seeks to win the ball and move quickly forward to catch the back line out of position.
Hedl operates between the posts to protect the goal. The defensive unit functions as a back five, with Grgic acting as the central anchor to hold the line. Cvetkovic plays as the right centre-back to provide cover, while Raux Yao occupies the left centre-back spot. Bolla and J. Auer act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and overlap the front three. This defensive unit can shift into a back three when defending deep to maintain compactness.
The midfield consists of a two man unit with Sangaré and Oswald working to control the center. Sangaré acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, while Oswald works to pick up runners and link the defensive and attacking lines. They must stay close to each other to compress the midfield and prevent opponents from playing through the lines. When the team loses possession, they work to win the second ball and trigger a press.
In the final third, SK Rapid utilizes three attackers across the front. Kara acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of the teammates. Seidl plays as a left winger who will cut inside to create goalscoring chances, while Radulovic operates on the right wing to pull wide and deliver crosses. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and isolate defenders in one on one situations as the wing backs push up to support the attack.
One tactical advantage for SK Rapid is the ability to create wide overloads using the wing backs to support the wingers. The team also possesses great speed of transition, moving from a defensive block to an attacking stance in seconds. This setup allows them to maintain numerical superiority in wide areas and exploit spaces behind the opposition full backs.
The 5-2-3 formation allows this side to be dangerous on the counter at pace. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
