TOP Oss relies on a compact low block and lightning quick transitions. This team operates in a 5-2-3 formation. The goal is to absorb pressure and then hit the opposition in behind with pace. This lineup is designed to sit deep and allow the attackers to exploit spaces left by teams playing a high line.

In goal, 1 stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit consists of a back five that can shift as a single block. 6 sits in the middle as the central defender to sweep behind the line. 4 plays as the left centre-back and 3 acts as the right centre-back to defend zonally. To provide width, 5 plays as the left wing-back and 2 works as the right wing-back. These wide players must track back to form a five-man line when the team is out of possession, but they also push up to support the attack. The central trio of 6, 4, and 3 must stay close together to deny the turn to any incoming strikers.

The midfield works as a double pivot consisting of 10 and 8. These two players occupy the center of the pitch to shield the defensive line. 10 and 8 must work hard to win the second ball and recycle possession quickly. When the team wins the ball, 10 and 8 connect the defense to the front three by playing through the lines. They do not often push too high, instead focusing on protecting the space in front of 6, 4, and 3. This allows them to move from a mid-block into a transition very quickly.

The attacking front line uses three players to stretch the defense. 9 operates as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. 11 and 7 play as wide wingers on either side of 9. 11 can cut inside to create chances, while 7 stays wide to deliver crosses. When TOP Oss moves forward, 2 and 5 overlap the wingers to create wide overloads. The forwards like 11, 9, and 7 press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. They look to break quickly and exploit the space behind the opponent's defenders.

This formation offers great compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping 6, 4, 3, 10, and 8 close together, the team makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another advantage is the speed of transition. With 11, 9, and 7 ready to run, the team can hit the opposition on the break before they can get organized. The ability of 2 and 5 to provide width also forces the opposition to stretch the defense.

The 5-2-3 formation is a defensive unit built to punish teams that leave gaps in behind. It is most effective against sides that commit many players forward and play a high line.
