OSCAR sits in the middle to connect the defense and the attack, while LUCAS FERREIRA and ENZO DÍAZ operate on either side of him. LUCAS FERREIRA and ENZO DÍAZ work to win the second ball and press the opposition in a mid block. OSCAR looks to recycle possession and find the forwards with accurate passing. This trio works to squeeze the space between the defensive and attacking lines to prevent the opposition from turning.

Up front, São Paulo utilizes two forwards in a partnership. LUCIANO and DINENNO work together to lead the line. LUCIANO often looks to play on the shoulder of the last defender to make runs in behind, while DINENNO can hold up the ball to bring others into play. The wing backs, ALAN FRANCO and FERRARESI, provide the width by stretching the defense. This allows LUCIANO and DINENNO to operate in the channels or combine in tight spaces. The attacking unit presses the opposition back line to force a long ball.

One major advantage for São Paulo is the defensive compactness when sitting in a low block. The three central defenders, including the aerially strong ARBOLEDA, make it very difficult for teams to find space in the box. Another strength is the ability to transition quickly using the width provided by FERRARESI and ALAN FRANCO.
