Southampton intend to control matches through high pressing and verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to use extreme numbers in the middle and front to overwhelm opponents.

Bazunu acts as the lone goalkeeper, playing a vital role when the team plays out from the back. The defensive unit relies on a very high line with only two central defenders, Wood and Edwards, who must be ready to step up and intercept long balls. Wood and Edwards function as ball playing defenders to start attacks quickly. Because there are only two players at the back, they must communicate constantly to manage the space behind them and defend zonally against quick runners.

The midfield is the engine of this Southampton side, acting as a massive block that controls the center of the pitch. Welington sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. To his sides, Downes and Sugawara operate as two central midfielders who carry the ball forward and press aggressively to win the second ball. Fernandes plays as an attacking ten in the left half-space, while Dibling operates in the right half-space to connect the midfield to the front line. This five man unit allows the team to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposition players.

In the attacking phase, the team uses three forwards to pin the last defender. Archer acts as the lone striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. He is supported by Brereton-Diaz on the left and Armstrong on the right. Brereton-Diaz and Armstrong often pull wide to stretch the defense, creating space for Fernandes and Dibling to arrive late into the box. The front three press the opposition back line constantly to force a long ball, allowing the midfield to win the ball back.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in midfield, making it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. The high press in coordinated waves allows Southampton to win the ball in dangerous areas. By having five players in the middle, they can easily switch play to the wide attackers to isolate a one-on-one wide situation.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward system built for aggressive, attacking football. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and hunt for goals against a side that sits deep.
