Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Calafiori · Timber · G. Magalhães · Saliba · Zubimendi · Rice · Havertz · Ødegaard · Saka · G. Jesus · RayaArsenal focuses on a heavy high press and aggressive verticality with this 2-5-3 formation. The team looks to dominate the game by winning the ball high up the pitch and immediately attacking the space behind the opposition. This lineup is built to control the center of the pitch and force turnovers through constant pressure, allowing the team to stay on the front foot for the duration of the match.
Raya sits behind a very narrow defensive unit. Saliba and G. Magalhães form a back two that plays a high line to squeeze the space and keep the opponent pinned. Saliba uses his aerial strength and recovery speed to cover for the high positioning, while G. Magalhães defends zonally to intercept passes and manage the central area. The pair will play out from the back to initiate attacks and spread the play.
A five man midfield block provides the engine for the Arsenal side. Calafiori and Timber occupy the deepest roles to shield the defence, with Timber often sitting deep to protect the center and break the line. Rice operates in the right central area, using his high pressing intensity to disrupt the opponent and win the ball back. Zubimendi links the play from the left, while Ødegaard acts as the attacking ten to play through the lines and find the forwards. This group works together to compress the midfield and win the second ball.
The attack features three players across the front to stretch the defence. Havertz acts as a pressing centre-forward who can hold up the ball and link play with the midfield. Saka operates on the right as an inverted winger who likes to cut inside to threaten the goal, using his dribbling style to beat his marker in one on one situations. G. Jesus plays on the left to provide width and make runs in behind. The team aims to attack in combinations and hit in behind on the transition.
This formation provides significant numerical superiority in the midfield. Having Rice, Zubimendi, and Ødegaard in close proximity allows the team to recycle possession and move the ball quickly between the lines to find gaps. The formation also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it hard for opponents to find a way out of their own defensive third.
The 2-5-3 is a highly aggressive formation meant to pin the opposition in their own half. It is most effective when facing teams that play a low block and struggle to defend against rapid transitions.
