Bologna focuses on high intensity and pressing to win the ball high up the pitch in this 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the opposition half and use quick transitions to catch teams out of position. The goal is to maintain a heavy presence in the middle of the pitch to control the tempo and force turnovers through constant pressure.

Skorupski acts as the last line of defense, often playing a sweeping role behind the two central defenders. Posch and Lucumí form a narrow defensive block, where Posch uses his aerial strength to defend crosses and Lucumí works to cover space if the line is breached. Because of the narrowness of the two center backs, the defensive unit relies on the midfield to drop back and protect the center, preventing teams from playing through the lines easily.

The midfield is the engine of the Bologna formation, operating as a five man unit that dominates the center. Holm and Miranda act as a double pivot to shield the defense, with Miranda often sitting deep to recycle possession. Aebischer and Freuler act as inverted eights, driving forward with the ball and making late runs into the box to support the attack. Ferguson plays as an attacking ten, operating in the pockets of space behind the striker to link the midfield to the front line and provide creative passes.

In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Domínguez and Orsolini act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create scoring chances, often leaving space for the midfield to exploit. Castro plays as the lone striker, acting as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball for others. This front line creates movement through combinations, with the wingers looking to isolate defenders in one on one situations or deliver crosses after getting to the byline.

One major tactical advantage for Bologna is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to bypass the central block. The team can also achieve wide overloads when the wingers and midfielders combine to overload the flanks. This allows the team to win the second ball frequently and maintain control of the game through high pressing in coordinated waves.
