Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
SANCHEZ · COLWILL · DISASI · CUCURELLA · MALO GUSTO · FERNANDEZ · CAICEDO · JOAO PEDRO · PALMER · NETO · GITTENSChelsea plays with a highly vertical identity using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack quickly before the opposition can settle into a defensive block. The goal is to stretch the defence and use the width of the pitch to create constant chances through direct play.
SANCHEZ operates in goal to start the build up. The defensive unit consists of a flat back four where MALO GUSTO and CUCURELLA cover the flanks. MALO GUSTO is expected to push forward to overlap the winger, while CUCURELLA provides balance on the left. DISASI and COLWILL form the central pairing, with COLWILL acting as a ball playing defender to play short from the back. DISASI stays deep to defend zonally and win the header when crosses come in to clear the lines.
In the middle of the pitch, the team utilizes a double pivot to control the tempo and protect the back four. CAICEDO uses his pressing intensity to hunt the ball and disrupt the opposition. FERNANDEZ uses his passing range to recycle possession and break the line with direct passes. This duo connects the defence to the front four, often having to cover large amounts of ground to intercept passes and prevent counter attacks.
The front line is composed of four attackers who look to pin the last defender. GITTENS and NETO stay wide to stretch the defence, with NETO often looking to cut inside and create space. PALMER plays as a second striker in the hole, using his dribbling style to move through the lines. JOAO PEDRO works as a pressing centre forward to force a long ball and win the second ball. This movement creates many runs in behind and allows the players to combine in tight spaces.
A key strength of this Chelsea formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. This puts immediate pressure on the opposition and forces mistakes in their own half. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the wingers. This creates many one on one situations for the attackers to exploit during the transition.
The 4-2-4 formation provides a direct and aggressive way to hunt for goals. It is most effective when playing against teams that try to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
