Besiktas Football Formation
Starting Lineup
mert · x · x · udokhai · jurasik · x · orkun · rafa · abraham · x · keremBesiktas aims to play a compact and vertical style of football using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup relies on narrow banks of players to protect the center and quick transitions to punish opponents. The team works to squeeze the space in the middle to force the opposition wide before looking to break quickly once the ball is recovered.
Mert stays on his line to act as the last line of defense. The back four consists of Jurasik at left back, Udokhai as the left centre back, and two other defenders covering the right side. Udokhai uses his aerial strength to defend crosses and win the second ball. The defensive unit works as a zonal line to maintain compactness, with the full backs ready to step up and close down wide players when the ball is on the opposite flank.
The midfield operates as a five man unit that can shift between a flat line and a more attacking five. Orkun sits in the defensive midfield to shield the back four and recycle possession. Alongside him, another player works to deny the pivot of the opposition. Rafa plays in the center to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while Kerem and another player occupy the left and right half spaces. These players are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and drive forward with the ball to progress through the thirds.
In the attacking phase, Besiktas uses a lone striker in Abraham to lead the line. Abraham acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball to allow the midfield to join the attack. The wingers and attacking midfielders look to cut inside to create central presence, often looking for runs in behind the defense. The team builds play by looking to find the feet of the striker or playing through the lines to catch the opponent out of position.
One major advantage for Besiktas is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield when the wide players tuck in. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can move from a mid block to an attacking wave in seconds once they win it back. This creates space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box.
This formation is built to stay solid and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession where Besiktas can sit deep and counter at pace.
