Újpest Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Fiola · Nunes · Duarte · Gergényi · Lacoux · Rasak · Matko · Medeiros · Horváth K. · Brodic · PiscitelliFocusing on directness and high pressure, Újpest utilizes a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is designed to play vertical football that aims to overwhelm the opposition through sheer numbers in the attacking zone. Players want to pin the last defender and force mistakes through constant pressure.
Piscitelli guards the goal and works to organize the defensive line. The back four consists of Nunes and Duarte as the central defenders, while Gergényi and Fiola occupy the full back positions. Duarte and Nunes must hold the line and defend zonally to stop any central penetrations. Gergényi and Fiola need to be ready to track back and cover the wide areas if the team loses possession. All defenders work together to squeeze the space and keep the defensive block tight.
The midfield relies on a double pivot consisting of Lacoux and Rasak. This pair is responsible for protecting the center and connecting the defense to the heavy front line. Lacoux plays a more defensive role to shield the defense and intercept passes, whereas Rasak looks to carry the ball forward and play through the lines. They must win the second ball to keep the pressure on the opponent. This duo acts as the pivot that allows the team to shift from a defensive posture to a rapid attack.
Up front, the team employs four attackers to stretch the defense. Medeiros and Brodic operate as a central duo, with Brodic working to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. On the flanks, Matko and Horváth K. provide the necessary width. Matko likes to cut inside to find space, while Horváth K. stays wide to deliver crosses. Forwards are instructed to press from the front to force the opposition to play long balls. This creates a lot of movement with runs in behind and players arriving late into the box.
One major advantage for Újpest is the ability to create numerical superiority in the attacking third. Having four forwards makes it difficult for a standard back four to mark everyone. They also benefit from the speed of transition, moving the ball quickly from the midfield to the wings. This formation makes it very hard for opponents to defend the wide areas when the full backs join the attack.
This 4-2-4 formation is built for aggressive, high scoring matches. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block or exploit a disorganized defense through rapid transitions.
