Jan Oblak guards the goal as the last line of defense. The defensive unit consists of a narrow back two featuring Giménez and Le Normand. Both central defenders must stay concentrated to cover the large spaces behind them, as the team often pushes high. Giménez acts as a dominant presence in the air while Le Normand works to intercept passes and clear the lines. Because there are no full backs, these two must defend man-to-man or defend zonally to prevent runners from getting behind.

The midfield operates as a four man block to control the center of the pitch. Ruggeri acts as the single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Beside the pivot, Molina and Cardoso occupy the half spaces to drive forward with the ball. Barrios works alongside them to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often pressing aggressively to win the ball in the middle third. This midfield group is tasked with winning the second ball and quickly finding the forwards.

In the attacking third, the team employs four players to stretch the defense. Griezmann plays as a central striker, often dropping into midfield to link up play and create space. He is joined by Alvarez, who acts as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender. On the flanks, Simeone stays wide on the right to provide width, while Alex Baena plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside. This creates a heavy central presence that looks to play through the lines and deliver crosses into the box.

Atlético gains a significant advantage through their ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
