Cobreloa Football Formation
Starting Lineup
TABILO · PÁEZ · SOLO · ESCOBAR · JIMÉNEZ · ALARCÓN · MERELLO · PUEBLA · SIVIERO · OLIVERA · WIRTHCobreloa is built to be defensively solid and relies on rapid transitions, playing with a 5-2-3 formation. The team focuses on remaining compact when out of possession before moving forward quickly to strike and exploit gaps in the opposition defense.
WIRTH starts in goal to command the area and organize the unit. The defensive unit utilizes a back five where JIMÉNEZ acts as the central defender to hold the line. PÁEZ operates as the right centre-back to cover space, while SOLO plays as the left centre-back to maintain the defensive line. On the flanks, ESCOBAR and TABILO act as attacking wing backs. They push up to provide width, while the three central defenders defend zonally to ensure the team remains hard to beat through the middle.
The midfield consists of a double pivot to control the central area of the pitch. ALARCÓN and MERELLO make up this two man midfield. ALARCÓN works to shield the defence and win the second ball, whereas MERELLO is tasked to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They must press in a mid-block to disrupt the opponent and regain possession high up the pitch. This pairing helps to recycle possession and move the ball quickly to the front three.
In the final third, the team uses three attackers across the front. SIVIERO acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and press from the front. PUEBLA and OLIVERA occupy the wide positions. PUEBLA looks to cut inside to create chances in the half spaces, while OLIVERA stretches the defence by staying wide. This formation creates runs in behind and allows the wing backs to overlap the winger to deliver crosses and find the feet of the striker.
A key advantage for Cobreloa is the numerical superiority in the defensive line, which makes it difficult for opponents to find gaps in the central area. The team also creates wide overloads because ESCOBAR and TABILO can push high to support the attack. This helps to isolate wide players in one on one situations when the wingers pull defenders out of position. The ability to break quickly on the transition is also a significant strength that makes them dangerous.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a robust defensive base while remaining ready to counter at pace. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and allow space to be exploited in behind.
